Overview

Gabapentin (brand name Neurontin) is a prescription medication approved to treat seizures and nerve pain. It is increasingly being misused for its sedative and euphoric effects, particularly when taken at high doses or combined with opioids. Some states have reclassified gabapentin as a controlled substance due to rising misuse rates.

Gabapentin dependence can develop with regular use, and withdrawal symptoms may include anxiety, insomnia, nausea, pain, sweating, and in some cases seizures. Treatment involves gradual dose reduction under medical supervision, behavioral therapy, and treatment of co-occurring conditions.
