Overview

Contingency management (CM) uses tangible incentives (vouchers, prizes, privileges) to reinforce positive behaviors such as negative drug tests, therapy attendance, and medication adherence. It is one of the most effective evidence-based treatments for stimulant use disorders, for which no FDA-approved medication currently exists.

How It Works

  • Patients receive rewards for meeting treatment goals
  • Incentives increase in value with sustained positive behavior
  • Reinforces the brain's reward system in healthy ways
  • Particularly effective for methamphetamine and cocaine use disorders
